Milford Haven Coastguard have recently had several calls from concerned members of the public, reporting possible flares over land or sea, varying in colours from orange to red to white.
On investigation and extensive questioning, they have been found to be a form of Chinese lantern.
'Thai Fire Lanterns' or 'Chinese Lanterns' are a new twist on the firework display at the end of parties, weddings etc.
The paper lanterns, fuelled by a wax paper wick, and in various colours, including red, are lit on the ground and they rise slowly and majestically into the air, creating an amazing sight when launched in multiples.
They originated in China some 1,800 years ago. Lanterns are becoming more popular and may be seen around the coast during the summer.
Should anyone see what they think is a flare, or light going up into the sky near or off the coast, do not hesitate to call the coastguard. They will always investigate, and they ask the public if they are planning to use these displays to call their operations room on 01646 690909 prior to the event and to advise staff of the details.
