THE niece and family of the late Angela Garner, who spent nearly four years living at Waungron Mansion in Whitland, have written to the Tenby Observer to highlight “a remarkable Pembrokeshire care home and the extraordinary people who run it.”

As well as providing personalised care, engagement and friendship, the Waungron team even allowed family members to stay in their motorhome in the grounds of the care home during Angela’s final weeks.

“My aunt, Angela Garner - known to me as "Ant" - lived at Waungron Mansion in Whitland from August 2022 until she sadly passed away on 4 August 2026, aged 90.

“Waungron is owned and led by Joanne Bain, supported by her managers Julie and Enfys and an exceptional team of carers.

“What makes this home so special is that its residents are never treated as numbers or simply as people whose basic needs must be met.

“Every individual is truly known - their personality, history, humour, preferences, abilities and wishes. The team does not merely look after residents; it helps them continue to live, laugh, participate and feel valued.

“Angela was affectionately known at Waungron as ‘Our Ange’. During her final weeks, the team protected her dignity, respected her wishes and surrounded her with genuine love.

“They also cared for us as a family. Joanne allowed my husband and me to stay in our motorhome within the grounds of Waungron so that we could be with Ant at any time, day or night. That kindness meant we never had to worry about being too far away when she needed us most.

“Their compassion helped carry us through one of the most painful periods of our lives.

“Joanne, Julie and Enfys have created a culture in which kindness is not an occasional gesture - it is present every day. Their team repeatedly goes beyond what anyone could reasonably expect from a care home.

“We believe these remarkable people deserve public recognition and should be considered for care-sector awards.”

The family believes that Waungron would benefit enormously from a wheelchair-accessible mobility vehicle.

The team wants to give residents more opportunities to enjoy outings, community events and the outside world, but suitable transport is essential.
