NARBERTH and District Probus president Patrick Jones and a group of members from the club travelled north recently to visit St Davids Old Farmhouse Brewery.
They were met by owners Mark Evans and his wife Emma, who is Mr Jones’ niece.
Emma, with the aid of a book of photographs, described all the work involved in restoring some ruined buildings on the farm into the pristine property which has emerged. Mark guided the group through the brewery and gave an expert description of the process of brewing beer.
The property, which was set up five years ago has a shop and hosts musical evenings and events on site. The Brewery has won several awards and has been nominated for many more across the UK. It welcomes visitors: check the website, www.oldfarmhousebrewery.co.uk, for opening hours.
Members were impressed by the sparkling cleanliness of the brewery and the meticulous attention to detail when measuring ingredients and the timing of various actions of each beer to achieve the repetitive distinctive taste of its predecessor.
Several of the ingredients are produced on the farm.
The brewery now produces seven varieties of beer ranging from a pale ale to a stout, all of which can be purchased in pubs and shops across mid and north Pembrokeshire. A very popular one incorporates kelp seaweed into the brew.
Many questions were asked after which many purchases were made.
Members then left for the Sloop Inn, Porthgain where they enjoyed an excellent lunch.
If you would like to join the club on future excursions, you are very welcome. Call Patrick Jones on 07846 660904 for further details.
