Forgotten Sounds
A POEM by Helene McKenna, Saundersfoot:
The sharp crack of fireside wood
Burning bright then dying dull,
The ice cream van's resounding bell
Metal bins being emptied well,
A dray horse stomps along cobbled streets
The bus conductor’s clicking ticket machine,
The Boys’ Brigade blow cornets on Sunday
A rattling tram crosses lines on Monday,
The steam train whistle howls loud and shrill
A bike's squeaky wheels proceeding uphill,
All gone now, but from elusive memory
I think of these past sounds in a reverie.
