A PEMBROKESHIRE village community celebrated the 40th anniversary of its annual horticultural show in memorable style on an August Saturday.
The Rhos Horticultural Show attracted excellent entries despite the challenging conditions posed by the long hot and dry summer.
Staged in the village hall and a marquee, the show was organised by The Rhos and District Association (TRADA). And it was one of the Association’s own members, Tydfil Morgan, who was invited to open the anniversary show.
Tydfil has been involved in all the shows held in the past 40 years and in her speech she recalled how it all started in 1986, initially organised by Rhos WI using the former village school, which had closed in 1985. Venues changed over the years, including a borrowed scouts’ tent, a cattle shed at Rose Castle, a WI member's garden, a marquee in Picton Castle grounds and in the old village hall. At one time the secretaries’ ‘office’ was a cattle box - which Tydfil’s family spent two days cleaning in advance of the shows!
In recent years the show had been organised by TRADA, based on the new village hall.
The anniversary day concluded with an excellent social evening, barbecue and disco in the village hall and marquee.
