The volunteer team at Pembroke Dock Heritage Centre has helped brothers Christopher and Michael Stone to trace the wartime service of their father in the Royal Air Force.
Their father, Corporal David Stone, was stationed at RAF Pembroke Dock in the marine craft section, supporting the operation of Sunderland flying boats. While there he met his future wife, Lilian Thomas, who lived at Station Road, Pembroke. She was then a member of the Women’s Land Army, working locally.
Said Christopher: “We brought along several photographs and records of our father’s time in the RAF and now we know more, thanks to the Heritage Centre team.
“Dad served at Sullom Voe in the Shetland Isles and then for over a year was in West Africa before being posted to Pembroke Dock in 1944. He met our mother and we are the result!”
John Evans, for the Heritage Centre team, added: “It was a great pleasure to welcome Christopher and Michael and to help them add to their family’s wartime story. The marine craft unit at Pembroke Dock was a most important part of the RAF station here – without the many types of marine craft in support flying boats would not have been able to operate.”
Copies of the photographs have been added to the Centre’s ever growing archive.
