FOLLOWING the recent Southend-on-Sea tragedy, when seven-year-old Leonna Ruka was killed by a falling tree in park, Pembroke Dock Mayor Cllr Michele Wiggins recommended employing a tree surgeon to check the trees in the town’s Memorial Park.
This was at the full council meeting on Thursday (July 3) and Town Clerk Sarah Scourfield confirmed that there is already a schedule in place for routine checking of the trees.

The ‘unkempt’ state of plaques was also raised, with the Town Clerk responding: “it’s on our list”.
The skate park, which has been in place since 2014, is in need of maintenance. Replacement equipment can be sourced from Belgium-based Rhino Ramps for around £1,800 including shipping, with no local options available, councillors heard. New parts to repair other play equipment would cost £78. Councillors approved allocating funds.

The issue of dogs being let into the skate park and children’s areas was discussed as an ongoing concern.
The Town Clerk said it has been an issue for a while, and she has had some “fruitful” conversations with dog owners. In April the Town council had posted a reminder on social media that dogs are not permitted in any of the children’s play areas, including the tennis courts and the bike track.

There was an air of defeat in the meeting as councillors noted how signage is ignored, removed or defaced. One councillor suggested they get WISE (Waste Investigations Support and Enforcement) on the case. “Forget the fag butt police,” he quipped, pointing out that encountering dog mess is a great deal more unpleasant.
On a more positive note, Councillor Maria Williams was pleased to report that several people had complimented the flowers in the town.
Following a successful Fun in the Park event in May, marking the park’s 100th anniversary, the date has been set for a similar event next year. It has been scheduled for Sunday, May 24, 2026, Spring Bank Holiday weekend and, once again, the rides will be free. With food and entertainments, the event will provide an opportunity to showcase what the town has to offer.
