ONLINE fraud, romance scams, identity theft, bogus texts, emails and ’phone calls: Members present at the Carew WI March meeting were given advice on protecting personal details and avoiding falling victim to scams.
Steve Benson-Davison visited from South Wales police’s Regional Economic Crime Prevention and Protect Office. It was his first visit to Carew and he was very taken with the natural beauty of the Castle, village and its surrounds.
Peppering his talk with examples and anecdotal experiences, Steve made what is a serious and scary subject more digestible.
Economic crime has a direct impact on the UK economy. Money stolen in scams is transferred out of the UK and across the world making others economies richer and the UK the poorer.
Steve’s talk was invaluable and he was heartily thanked for making the long journey down. He emphasised that he is available to talk to any organisation or group in order to prevent such crimes and more importantly to protect vulnerable victims in our own area who fall foul of these sophisticated criminals.
One thing is for sure - members and their friends and family - will be all the safer after adopting all the hints and tips Steve suggested.
After tea, members settled down to the business of the day. Carew WI welcomed three new members. Women are warmly invited to come along for three free sessions to test the waters before officially joining permanently.
The details of the Summer trip were finalised and plans outlined for additional outings.
On April 1, members will be tasting Easter treats from Dilly’s Chocolates.
