Action for Children has celebrated a major success after its Operational Director for Children's Services in Wales won Gold at the prestigious Wales Care Awards.

Swansea’s own Sandra White received the Leadership and Management in Residential Care Award, sponsored by Christie & Co, at a ceremony in Cardiff on Friday evening, recognising her outstanding contribution to residential care and her leadership in supporting children and young people across Wales.

The Wales Care Awards celebrate excellence across the social care sector, recognising individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and achievement in their field.

Across Wales, all of Action for Children's children's homes are currently rated Good or Excellent by inspectors, reflecting the charity's commitment to providing high-quality, nurturing environments where children and young people can thrive.

Sandra provides operational leadership and support to a number of Action for Children's residential children's services in Wales and has dedicated her career to ensuring vulnerable children and young people receive the highest standards of care, support and opportunity.

The award highlights Action for Children's continuing commitment to delivering high-quality residential care services and supporting children and young people to achieve their full potential.

Laurie Ryall, National Director for Wales at Action for Children, said: "Everyone at Action for Children is absolutely delighted to see Sandra receive this well-deserved recognition.

“Sandra is so passionate about the work that she does and has an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of children and young people, supporting our staff and ensuring our homes provide a safe and nurturing environment.

“Sandra’s nomination was supported by all of her staff teams, who describe her as ‘an exceptional director because she leads with heart, humility, and unwavering commitment to the children and families we support’.

“This award reflects what all of us at Action for Children have long known about Sandra’s dedication, leadership and impact. It is particularly special to see those qualities recognised externally, and we could not be prouder of this achievement."

Sandra said she was honoured to receive the award and paid tribute to the colleagues she works alongside:

“I am incredibly honoured to receive this award, but it really belongs to the amazing teams I have the privilege of working with every day. Residential care is all about providing children with the stability, support and belief they need to thrive, and that can only be achieved through the dedication of talented and compassionate colleagues.

“Seeing children overcome challenges, build confidence and achieve their goals is what motivates all of us. I am proud to be part of an organisation that is committed to giving every child the chance of a safe and happy childhood and a positive future."
