Festivals and other community events in Pembrokeshire are to benefit from a free marketing brochure funded by the WDA and the Welsh Assembly Government.

Fifteen thousand copies of the full-colour, bilingual brochure will list community-led events throughout the county from March to December. Organisers will benefit from a series of training workshops and a manual to help them plan and deliver a successful event.

Details of food, music and literary festivals, agricultural shows, carnivals, regattas, food and wine fairs and markets will all feature in the brochure for no charge. The brochure will be distributed both inside and beyond the county. The idea is to help boost tourism and other local businesses.

The free promotion and training is being organised by PLANED - Pembrokeshire Local Action Network for Enterprise and Development.

PLANED community entrepreneurship officer Helen Thomas said: "Our purpose is to make sure that local communities and businesses get the maximum possible economic benefit from festivals and events.

"We believe the benefits could include increased attendance, economic benefits for local traders, and more visitors to the county.

"This builds on the success of a pilot project last year. We'll be giving priority to events organised by community-led groups. They must have broad appeal and be of interest to both tourists and local people.

"It's hoped that some of the events will reflect or highlight the distinctive culture, heritage or environment of Pembrokeshire and there must be a commitment to quality and professionalism in terms of organisation and promotion.

"PLANED will also be running a series of training workshops that will focus on aspects of event planning such as presentation, fund-raising, health and safety and licensing."

'Festivals and Events in Pembrokeshire 2003' is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government's Rural Recovery Programme administered by the Welsh Development Agency.
