A NEW exhibition of ceramics by Paul Roche was officially opened at Tenby Museum and Art Gallery by ceramicist Mick Morgan on Friday.
Aptly entitled Coloured Clay, the exhibition features 100 works of ceramic and preparatory sketches. The ceramics are mostly brightly glazed and provide a humorous perspective on everyday objects.
Paul said: "Domestic objects such as smoothing irons, food mixers, electric fans and taps have long fascinated me; my perception of them has filled the pages of many of my sketchbooks for several years.
"Everyday life is filled with contact with the ordinary, the commonplace. What if I took everyday things into the realms of fantasy, stretching visual credulity by introducing bizarre elements and presenting humorous possibilities?"
He continues: "In 2006, I began making some of these everyday objects, working with strong, intensely bright colours, using low temperature glazes on modelled surfaces, celebrating the tactile immediacy that is ceramics.
"I began to exaggerate form, altering scale and proportion, adding texture and decoration where there was none and often ignoring purpose and function."
Paul's take on domestic appliances is evident in the work on show at the museum. This sales exhibition runs until Sunday, August 2.
