A former Pembrokeshire College MITEC student is enjoying her flourishing career, building parts for McLaren and Ford GT.

Sarah Goring studied boat building at MITEC in 2011 and is currently working as a composite laminator for KS Composites, Melton Mowbray.

Having previously worked on the sailing rig and mast of the biggest super yacht in the world, she is now making parts for the automotive industry.

Sarah said: “I can’t reveal too much about my job as it’s such a competitive sector, our technologies are top secret and copyrighted.”

KS Composites is a leading independent manufacturer of composite and GRP products and were the team behind the bikes used by the winning GB Women’s Pursuit team at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

At Pembrokeshire College’s MITEC Centre, Sarah made a Canadian canoe with oak thwarts, seats and gunwales. She naturally progressed to work in the marine industry, building large carbon fibre structures for magma structures whose clientele include Ben Ainsley Racing, Americas Cup Boat and Hugo Boss.

Sarah said that she now applies the same principles to her work as she did at college.

“What has amazed me is how much of the traditional knowledge I learnt at college still applies when using modern materials, especially when it comes to shaping and fitting out crafts.”

Pembrokeshire College MITEC lecturer, Malcolm York commented: “It was great to see Sarah during a recent college trip to KS Composites. We’re really happy to see that her career is going from strength to strength! She is setting a good example to our students, especially to girls in engineering.”

Sarah isn’t the only Pembrokeshire face at KS Composites as project manager, Alastair Trimmer graduated from Pembrokeshire College in 2002 with a BSc in sail and powerboat studies.
