Pembrokeshire College’s Head of International and Higher Education, Professor Rod Thomas has been chosen to attend the Patron’s Lunch to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s patronage of 600 charities on the occasion of her 90th birthday.

As a member of the Institute of Engineering Technology, Rod was selected from a pool of 167,000 members from 127 countries to represent IET at the event on June 12.

Having recently joined the college, Professor Rod Thomas is delighted to have been chosen to attend the event.

“I am one of nine ambassadors chosen to represent IET at the Patron’s Lunch,” he explained. “Other representatives include members from Canada, England and India.”

As a guest, Rod will be able to enjoy a bespoke M&S hamper containing homegrown British produce before being entertained by a carnival-style procession which will begin at the Horse Guards Parade and travel along The Mall.

As a chartered engineer, Rod will be representing the UK engineering workforce and hopes to engage IET with Pembrokeshire College students in the future.

“I would like to develop a STEM academy at Pembrokeshire College as we attract so many talented learners,” he said.

STEM is a curriculum based on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Rather than teach the four subjects separately, they are integrated to enable students to learn how to apply their knowledge in real-life STEM careers such as engineering.

The Patron’s Lunch is a once-in-a-lifetime experience attended by Her Majesty the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the royal family. The occasion will be televised on BBC One on Sunday, June 12, so tune in to see if you can spot Rod amongst the crowd!
