Recently, Jennie and Tony Davies opened up their home in Haverfordwest, to over 80 people, raising funds for Tearfund and 'Campaign to End Fistula'. The house was buzzing with cheerful chatter as tea, coffee and cream scones were served to the visitors. Donations of £550 have been collected so far.
The charities chosen to benefit from these generous donations have a special connection to the hosts. As a former gynaecologist, Tony Davies is a supporter of 'Campaign to End Fistula'.
"Obstetric Fistula is a problem we do not see any more in this country," he said. "In areas like Africa, India and Arabia, due to lack of adequate medical care, women suffer in labour for days. Obstetric Fistula leaves a hole in the birth canal, caused by the prolonged labour, and without prompt medical intervention, the woman is left with chronic incontinence and, in most cases, a still born baby. "Healthwise, the effects are devastating, but women who suffer the long term effects are often ostracised by their families," added Tony. "Poverty restricts the victims of the condition who could be saved by an operation costing £150."
Jennie and Tony Davies are also regular supporters of Tearfund.
"For many years we have supported Tearfund," said Jennie. "We feel that the money goes straight to the source with very few administrative costs. We also support Tearfund in our church 'Life Group'. We hope that the money collected can be used in Tearfund's Water Projects."
Francis Maull, church representative co-ordinator (Pembrokeshire) for Tearfund, said: "The poor are relying on us to act on their behalf. They are crippled by poverty and it is up to us to put our faith into action. We thank Jennie and Tony; by organising events like this coffee morning we can make a real difference in people's lives."
Another way to make a difference is to join Jennie, Tony and Francis in signing up to Tearfund's prayer declaration and global poverty prayer chain. Tearfund are passionate about the local church bringing justice and transforming lives. Their 10- year vision is to see 50 million people released from material and spiritual poverty through a worldwide network of 100,000 local churches.
"Please join our prayer declaration as a sign of commitment to yourself and to God that you'll pray, and we'll add you to the prayer map," said Tearfund's local media officer, Sharron Hardwick. You'll be joining a worldwide movement of Christians praying for change. We believe that when Christians and churches work as one, towards a shared vision, change follows."
