Members of Tenby Coastguard Unit have been stepping out this week in aid of a good cause.

As part of a national fund-raising scheme, HM Coastguard volunteers from all over the country are teaming up to walk round mainland Britain's coastline in a clockwise direction to raise money for the Jubilee Sailing Trust, a UK-based charity that promotes the integration of able-bodied and physically disabled people through the adventure of tall ship sailing.

The Coastwalk 2002 event, which is expected to take approximately one year to complete, started at Land's End at the beginning of January and hit Pembrokeshire at the beginning of the week.

Members of the Tenby team took over from their colleagues at Llansteffan to walk the 34-mile stretch from Amroth to Bosherston, where they were due to hand over to their colleagues from Dale yesterday (Thursday) to continue the challenge.

The team, who have been provided with refreshments by Truly Scrumptious, have been carrying Coastguard and Jubilee Sailing Trust emblems, pedometers, GPS's and a portable transponder for coastguard stations to monitor progress on a computer tracking system.

They have also kept up a logbook of names, dates and times and points of interest to form a permanent record on completion of the 4,300-mile walk.

In addition, a Jubilee Sailing Trust mascot was carried, plus a bottle of Pussers Navy Rum, which will be auctioned at the end. A support vehicle driven by Philip Crockford was also close at hand as back-up.

Local coastguards have been collecting sponsorship and are hoping to raise a good sum of money for the charity. Anyone who would like to sponsor them is asked either to contact them individually or contact their office at Broadwell Hayes or the headquarters at Milford Haven.
