The first rural footpath in Carmarthenshire creating total access for disability scooters has been created from Delacorse to Laugharne.

Passing through grazing pastures with spectacular views of the River Taf the 2.5-mile circular route passes right by Dylan Thomas's Boathouse.

It was created by the council's countryside recreational and access unit.

Access disability campaigner John Hollies said: "This is a notable milestone by the council in fulfilling the PC theory of creating greater disability access in the county. This is the first really rural path giving access to disability scooters in the county.

"The county are to be complemented on installing installing new gates along the route that can be opened by scooter riders using Radar keys which means they don't have to be accompanied or need to dismount.

"I want to compliment the council team for their magnificent achievement. The new furniture along the route is simpler and more usable than I had feared it might be and they have used great sensitivity with the other features and works."

County executive board member for regeneration and leisure services Clive Scourfield said: "This is a magnificent footpath with breathtaking views along a route rich with heritage passing a destination that is known worldwide.

"It is fantastic that is it now accessible to all and I am expecting to see it very well used next summer and will be keen to see this kind of accessibility benefit rolled out across the county."

The work was 100 per cent funded as part of the first years Wales Coastal Access Improvement Programme 2007-12 and funded directly by the Assembly administered by the Countryside Council for Wales.
