On Saturday, Pembroke Dock Women’s Institute were given a treat which they sure deserved. This was also to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the WI.

Said Mayor of the town, Clr. Peter Kraus: “It was a tough event to organise as we had to have the 17 ladies there on the day without fail, Their president, Pamela George, managed to do just that without letting slip what was happening and why.

“At 8.30 am, a fantastic coach from Silcox Coach Company turned up for the transporting of the ladies on their mystery trip. The coach was decorated inside and out. The outside was done by the very talented PCSO Dave Powell using balloons with the 100th birthday and hearts for all the ladies. It looked fantastic.

“At 9.30 am, a convoy of over 100 classic cars and a lorry turned up at the dockyard chapel in Pembroke Dock to be displayed for the public to view and then for them to see them all off at 11.30 am.

“The ladies did not have a clue what was happening until they were all on board the coach and then I told them small bits to keep them guessing. At 11.30 am, we all left in a convoy and headed through Pembroke Dock to Pembroke, Castlemartin, Freshwater West, then finally Angle Beach.

“At 1.10 pm, we left Angle and headed back to the dockyard chapel for another surprise. When we left at 11.30 am, the kind Sunderland Trust staff and volunteers went into action. Out came the red carpet, fantastic balloons at the entrance, the tables all laid, the cakes by the way all donated by fantastic ladies, ladies from Tesco’s serving the teas and coffees, what a day, and none of this would have been possible without the help of so many people, including the fantastic Jeff and Sian Edwards, (Classic Car Club), the terrific drivers of all those classic vehicles, the stewards, Sunderland Trust, Silcox Coach Company, Dave Powell and all the fantastic volunteers who gave up their valuable time.

“Thank you to you all for giving the ladies of the Pembroke Dock WI their dream day.

“Happy 100th annuiversary WI from Peter Kraus, Mayor of Pembroke Dock. We love you.”
