The abrupt closure of village surgeries was condemned as a tragedy for rural communities throughout Wales, when the Pembrokeshire Community Health Council met recently.
In the wake of the axing of Angle's twice-weekly surgery, members heard with dismay of the proposal to close the 80-year-old service provided at Clarbeston Road and Maenclochog outreach surgeries.
The service is provided by two doctors based at the Narberth Health Centre who cite the new GMS contract as one of several reasons for their intention to discontinue the rural consultations.
A recent public meeting held at Clarbeston Road Village Hall drew over 80 objectors to the closure.
The chief officer, chairman and some of the members of the Pembrokeshire Community Health Council attended, but there was no one present from Narberth Health Centre to present their case, or from the Pembrokeshire Local Health Board.
Pembrokeshire CHC agreed to object to the closures and write to the Welsh Assembly Government highlighting the domino effect the new doctors contract would have on village surgeries throughout Wales.
In the meantime, the council is asking that the rural services continue while a compromise solution is sought.
