Apart from the flurry of showers last Saturday morning, players in the Men's County Bowls Finals were blessed with fine weather.
They beavered away in their attempts to win the county championships, egged on by a happy and appreciative crowd of fellow bowlers from many clubs in the county.
Proceedings got underway with PCBA competition secretary, Morlais Powell, introducing president Arwel Edwards, having confirmed that he, (Morlais) was relinquishing the post of competition secretary after 12 years in the saddle.
His was an unenviable task, especially with the constant barrage of competition results pouring in daily during the playing season.
All players were most appreciative of Morlais's mother's part over the years. Amelia Powell deserves a medal for the helpful way she dealt with the numerous calls daily and for progressing the competitions when Morlais was away.
Results in the county finals were as follows:
Open singles: J. Roberts (Saundersfoot) 21 P. Diment (Saundersfoot) 18. This was a classic match between these two clubmates.
Open pairs: R. O'Leary and C. Jones (Haverfordwest) 15 J. Baggott and D. Poole (Saundersfoot) 14. Another thrilling, high classed, very low scoring game. It took an extra end to separate the pairs and the winners were in doubt right up to the last bowl being delivered.
Triples: P. Day, A. Muskett and P. Currie (Tenby) 22 B. George, J. Dixon, R. Price (Haverfordwest) 11. The Tenby trio were very quickly in the groove with very impressive bowling. The flying start, however, proved too much for the Haverfordwest men, who sportingly conceded before the end.
Rinks: J. Roberts, P. Diment, P. Carpenter and M. Bishop (Saundersfoot) 20 B. Absalom, D. Summers, C. Jones and R. Fairhurst (Haverfordwest) 11. The end result did not reflect the quality bowling by both rinks as the Saundersfoot quartet ran out comfortable winners.
Mixed pairs: Andrea and Glyndwr Thomas (Whitland) 22 Audrey Owens and Bert Barnikel (Tenby) 19. This was a very even contest throughout the game, with youth winning through.
Under 18 singles: J. Dixon (Haverfordwest) 21 J. Criddle (Saundersfoot) 9. A fine display of accurate bowling for men so young. They are obviously the stars of our future.
Under 25 singles: J. Dixon (Haverfordwest) 21 Gareth Hughes (Saundersfoot) 6.
Under 35 singles: J. Dixon (Haverfordwest) 21 M. Jones (Whitland) 10.
President Arwyn Edwards presented the prizes and the Pendine members did an excellent job ensuring everyone was well fed and watered.
