Cllr Giles Morgan has taken on the role of Carmarthenshire County Council Chair, with a focus on supporting Dementia UK and Bloodwise during his term.

Cllr Morgan, member for the Swiss Valley Ward, was elected to the chain of office at Carmarthenshire Council’s Annual Meeting held on Wednesday, May 20.

On taking the chair, Cllr Morgan paid tribute to the outgoing Chair and thanked Cllr Dot Jones for her service to the Council.

Cllr Morgan will chair the Council for the next 12 months, with his wife, Mrs Claire Morgan as his Consort, and Cllr Betsan Jones, member for Betws as his Vice-Chair.

Following the Annual Meeting, Cllr Morgan, Chair of the Council commented: “I’m honoured to be elected Chair of Carmarthenshire County Council and I look forward to the year ahead.”

Cllr Morgan has chosen Dementia UK and Bloodwise as his charities for the forthcoming term.

The Chair is the first citizen of Carmarthenshire County Council and is elected at the Annual General Meeting.

Duties include chairing full meetings of the Council, representing the Council at formal and ceremonial occasions, welcoming visitors to the County, and attending and supporting events organised by local people and organisations.

Cllr Mogan has been a County Councillor since 2004, Chairs the Council’s Corporate Performance & Resources Committee and sits on the Audit Committee.

Back in December of last year, Cllr Linda Evans was named as the Leader of Carmarthenshire County Council and Chair of the Cabinet following a meeting of Full Council, after Cllr Darren Price resigned from the position for ‘personal reasons’.

Cllr Evans is a member of the Plaid Cymru group and has served Carmarthenshire County Council as a councillor for the Llanfihangel-ar-Arth ward since 2008, and has been a member of the Cabinet since 2015.

The current Deputy Leader is Cllr Hazel Evans.
