A 34-year-old rock climber sadly died after sustaining injuries while climbing on Bosherston Head at the weekend.

It is understood the man's girlfriend was lead climbing on a route known as 'Fifty Lashes Mister Christian' graded as E4 6b, on Sunday, when she dislodged a boulder which fell some 60-feet before hitting her companion on the chest.

This knocked him from his belay position, causing him to fall further down the cliff until arrested by his belay line, which saved him from falling into the sea.

Other climbers in the immediate area went to his assistance and decided to haul him up the cliff.

Simultaneously, a 999 call was made to the coastguard for assistance.

MRCC Milford Haven tasked both St. Govan's and Tenby Coastguard Rescue Teams, along with the coastguard sector manager to the scene.

An RAF Rescue Helicopter from Chivenor was scrambled and the Welsh Ambulance Service was contacted for assistance.

The injured climber, Jonathan Woods, who was from the Bristol area, was airlifted to Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, where he later died.

Said a coastguard spokeswoman: "Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time."

A statement on UKClimbing.com said Mr. Woods was an "extremely experienced climber."

"Mr. Woods, an environmentalist, was born and brought up in Cheddar. His late father Michael Woods was a well-known naturalist and chairman of the British Mammal Society.

"Woody was a well-known and universally loved character on the UK climbing scene. The climbing community is devastated by his loss, it was such an unfortunate accident. Our thoughts go to his family and friends."
