AS climate change becomes the most important issue of the day, two of the world's leading experts on the subject will be heard in Pembrokeshire later this month. On Tuesday, February 20, Sir John Houghton, the former head of the UK Met Office and the UN's expert scientific panel on climate change, will give an illustrated presentation at Narberth's Queen's Hall. The public meeting, which is being jointly organised by Pembrokeshire Friends of the Earth and the West Wales Eco Centre, will end with a panel question and answer session that will focus more on local issues. Admission is free and doors open at 7.30 pm. The following Sunday at 7.30 pm, Pembrokeshire Friends of the Earth groups and the Narberth Film Society will put on a showing of Al Gore's film, 'The Inconvenient Truth', also at the Queen's Hall. Al Gore is the former vice-president of the USA who, in recent years, has earned considerable praise around the world for raising awareness about climate change. "Climate change is the biggest challenge we face today and is now top of the political agenda," said Gordon James, of Pembrokeshire Friends of the Earth. "We are very pleased that one of the world's leading experts on the subject has accepted our invitation to give a presentation in West Wales. Although Sir John Houghton has a very distinguished scientific background, he presents information in a way that can be easily understood by ordinary people. "We hope the talk, and the film the following Sunday, will lead to a better understanding of the problem and the measures we can take to address it, both nationally and locally," he added.
