Fines for dog-fouling are to be increased three-fold.
The Welsh Assembly announced new regulations this week, which will increase fixed penalty notices from £25 to £75.
They came into force yesterday (Thursday) and will be enforced by Pembrokeshire County Council.
Clr. Peter Stock, cabinet member for communities, welcomed the rise.
"The Pembrokeshire Residents Survey 2002 showed that dog fouling is among the environmental issues which cause people the most concern in Pembrokeshire," he said.
"But it also has an economic impact. Very few tourists and businesses are going to visit or invest in places covered in dog mess."
Under the new legislation, Pembrokeshire County Council - together with other local authorities - will be able to retain the money collected from fixed penalties.
They will reinvest this money in improving the local environment and offsetting the costs associated with issuing fixed penalty notices.
"We are all keen to see more responsible dog ownership and Pembrokeshire County Council has introduced a scheme to encourage this," said Clr. Stock.
"We also want to see a better, cleaner and safer environment for everyone. By increasing these fines, we will be making some progress towards achieving this."
