Facilities have now been installed at the county's civic amenity sites that allow all types of wood and cardboard to be recycled alongside existing waste separation streams, providing the wood is clean and the cardboard is flat packed. Recycling cardboard will be free of charge for businesses and home owners, while a charge will be levied on businesses for recycling wood. Home owners can use this facility for free. Prior to the upgrade, this facility was only available at the civic amenity and recycling centre at Winsel, near Haverfordwest. Pembrokeshire County Council's cabinet member for environment, planning and regulatory services, Clr. Huw George, explained the investment in these facilities was both welcome and necessary. "I'm delighted the authority has put these resources in place. It's imperative we reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, especially bio-degradable waste such as wood and cardboard," he said. "Investing in facilities such as this and reducing the amount of money we spend on disposing our waste through landfill makes both good environmental and business sense for Pembrokeshire. "The authority is committed to improving the provision for recycling in the county as we work towards reaching the recycling targets set out by the Welsh Assembly Government. "This will include consideration of how best to collect household recyclate from those properties not currently served by the popular orange bag scheme. "If we fail to reach these targets, we could be fined a substantial amount of money which would mean less to spend on the other services that the council provides for the residents of Pembrokeshire."
