Supported by a teenage violin virtuoso and a Welsh soprano who is a contender for next year's Singer of the World competition, Cor Meibion De Cymru helped to provide a magnificent finalé to the 13th annual Milford Haven Music Festival at The Torch on Saturday. The immaculately turned-out, well-disciplined choir demonstrated an exceptional blend of ringing top tenors, mellow basses and a well-balanced and unobtrusive middle section. Under the brilliant control of musical director Elaine Robins, they demonstrated their dulcet tonality and versatility wth power and tenderness in perfect proportion. Accompanist Sian Davies showed all the skill of her famous accompanist/composer father Brian, while compere Barri Hurford presented the entire concert with admirable aplomb. During its 32-year history, the choir has sung all over the world and their thrilling sound must have heightened the emotional charge at their recent performances at Ypres and the Menin Gate at the World War One commemorations. Musical prodigy Charlie Lovell Jones (15), winner of the coveted Blue Riband at this year's Royal National Eisteddfod at Llanelli and six times Urdd National Eisteddfod string prizewinner, enchanted his audience with his amazing virtuosity in complex, super-allegro pieces by Chopin, Paganini and Prokofiev. Cardiff-born Charlie, accompanied by his father Simon, held the audience in thrall with his flying fingers and speed-blurred bow. Swansea-born soprano Celine Forrest also thrilled with her effortless displays of vocal virtuosity in offerings from Mozart, Gounod, Meirion Williams and Roger Quilte, including a beautiful perfomance of Dove Sono from the Marriage of Figaro. She and the young violinist joined the choir in a triumphall grand climax of 'When you walk through a storm'. Sponsored by Valero and ending with a standing ovation and encore, the exceptional quality of this concert more than justified the tremendous year-round work of Festival chairman and impresario, June Rees. Festival president Glan Phillips paid tribute to the generous sponsorship and support of Valero, South Hook LNG, the County Council, Town Council, Fred Rees Garages, Pembroke Power Station, Inner Wheel, Rotary, Barclays Bank and Festival Friends - support crucial to the continuation of this important festival.
