The Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir, under their conductor David Gwynn, entertained a large gathering at a presentation ceremony which marked Tenby Golf Club's most successful 24th Open Week.
This annual event attended by golfers from all over Great Britain and the Continent, is one of the highlights of the Tenby golfing calendar and Malcolm Arlott, entertainments co-ordinator at the club, in introducing the choir on Thursday evening, June 5, spoke of their renowned quality and status and how their appearance that evening was a most fitting end to a week of high quality golf and entertainment.
The choir of 32 choristers presented a varied programme of 12 items and received a standing ovation at the end of the evening, and sang two encores, Nessan Dorma and Gwahoddiad.
During the evening, they had sung, amongst other items, 'Alexander's Rag Time Band' with solo pieces rendered by Sam Thomas, bass, and David Holt, tenor, while David also sang a solo piece in 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic'.
Among such classical choral items as 'The Soldiers Chorus' from 'Faust' by Gounod, and the Welsh favourite 'Pan for nos yn hir', they also sang 'She' and 'When I fall in love', while their rendering of 'Viva La More' received loud applause and acclaim.
Solo spots during the evening were presented by Henry Johnson, tenor, who sang the Irish piece 'Gypsy Rover', Owen Jones, bass, and the senior chorister belied his 80 years with his rendering of 'When a lady takes your fancy' and Joan Lewis, soprano, sang beautifully to a spellbound audience Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Music of the Night' from the Phantom of the Opera.
Alyson Griffiths, who assisted Chris Lloyd as choir accompanist, played the Acker Bilk piece 'Stranger on the Shore' on the flute.
The evening was compered by Phil Lloyd, choir secretary, adding elements of local humour for the entertainment of the Open Week visitors.
The choir appeared in Tenby again on Tuesday evening, June 10, at St. Johns Church to an audience of local choral followers and a substantial number of visitors to the resort.
Tomorrow (Saturday) at 7 pm, the choir will give a concert on the deck of the very large Russian tall ship 'Sedon' which will be visiting Milford on June 13, 14, 15 and 16, by arrangement with the Tall Ships (Wales) Trust. This spectacular vessel will be open to the public on Saturday, Sunday and Monday between 9.30 am and 2 pm. A number of other events have been arranged to mark her visit.
