It was good to see so many people at Tenby’s Deer Park Baptist Church last Friday evening - and what a treat awaited them!
The crowd had gathered to enjoy an evening of music by Haverfordwest Male Voice Choir and two talented young soloists.
Beginning with the rousing ‘Let All Men Sing’, the choir captivated their audience with ‘There is a Green Hill’, sung to a beautiful new tune, followed by Aled Wyn’s tender lullaby, ‘My Child’. They finished the first selection with ‘Bring Him Home’ from the popular musical Les Miserables.
The choir was in excellent voice. They were clearly delighted with the venue and made the most of the soaring acoustics.
It was then time for the soloists to step forward. Sixteen-year-old trumpeter Joshua Morris played the second movement of Haydn’s Concerto for Trumpet in E-flat, and Dvorak’s ‘Song to the Moon’ with wonderful control and beauty.
Nia Lewis, a 14-year-old musician, charmed the audience with her cello performances of ‘Orietale’ by César Cui and ‘The Swan’ from Saint Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals.
Joshua joined the choir on ‘For the Fallen’, which was sung and played with great emotion. The choir continued with ‘Benedictus’ by Robert Arwyn, followed by ‘My Lord, What a Morning’ and finished their second selection with ‘If Only We Have Love.’
The soloists’ second programme contained some great favourites as Joshua played ‘The Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves’ and Clarke’s Trumpet Voluntary before Nia enthralled the audience with four folk songs beautifully played on the harp: ‘Ymadawiad Y Brenin’ (The Departure of the King), ‘Llwyn Onn’ (Ash Grove), Bygeilio’r Gwenith’ (Watching the White Wheat) and ‘The Water is Wide’.
It was left to the Haverfordwest Male Voice Choir and their brilliant accompanist to bring a most memorable and enjoyable evening to a close. Songs were ‘Great is He, the Lord Eternal’ (Bryn Myrddin), the lyrical ‘Sailing’, ‘Moab’, the stirring ‘World in Vision’ and a glorious rendition of ‘When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.’
Thanks are given to all who helped make the evening such a success.
