Tenby Town Council are to write to Pembrokeshire County Council's safety officer and the local police in a bid to have another crossing patrol in Heywood Lane

At last month's meeting of the council, concern about the safety of school children crossing Heywood Lane at Tudor Way prompted Clr. Mrs. Caroline Thomas to launch a heartfelt appeal for a 'lollipop person'.

The previous 'lollipop' person had moved on to a different job and all efforts by Pembrokeshire County Council had tried and failed to find a person willing to take over the crossing patrol from Tudor Way to Tenby Junior School.

Speaking on Tuesday night, Clr. Mickey Folland said that he had raised the issue with Mr. John Gobbi, the county council's safety officer, who had explained that the authority were having difficulty replacing as many as seven lollipop people around the county.

"A lot of people are unwilling to take on the post, particularly if they are on benefits, because the wage means you would lose benefits.

"If we cannot get a lollipop person, then the police need to be asked to get an officer there as a priority," he stressed.

Clr. Mrs. Kerri Durham agreed. "Something has got to be done before there is an accident," she said.

Clr. Folland suggested that letters be sent to both the county council and the police.

"Hopefully one or the other will be able to take action," he said.

"Perhaps training could be given to the parents to give some form of temporary cover until the post is filled," he suggested.

"Action has to be taken because the safety of children is paramount," added Clr. Trevor Hallett.
