After enjoying success recently in the 'National Festival of Music For Youth' event held in Birmingham, musicians from Greenhill School were given a further boost this week with three donations.
Mrs. Jill O'Sullivan, chairman of Tenby and District Bridge Club, was on hand on Monday to present Greenhill's head of music, Mr. Paul Rapi, with a cheque for £400, raised at the club's recent 'Grand Whist and Bridge' tournament, which was well supported by the card enthusiasts at Tenby's De Valence Pavilion.
Mrs. O'Sullivan was very pleased by the turnout of whist and bridge players drawn from many clubs here in south-west Pembrokeshire, and thanked Jo and John Davies along with Pauline Barnikel for their crucial input and the generosity of the raffle prize donors.
At the same ceremony, president of Tenby Bowling Club, Bert Barnikel, was pleased to also hand over £141 to the school's Orchestra Fund, raised at a 'quiz night' in the club.
Bowlers were delighted when Rebecca Hobbs and Sam Turton, of the school's Clarinet Quintet, entertained them with clarinet and violin renditions of current music from the 'shows'.
"A special thanks to Newman Vincent for his important public relations slant, at both venues. Many had no idea how talented our Greenhill School Orchestra is," said Bert.
"To underline their excellence, the orchestra were invited to participate in a special high classed event recently in Birmingham, achieving a stunning equal first," he added.
Newman was also able to present Mr. Rapi with a cheque for £135 towards the orchestra, raised from donations given by parents who had travelled up to the Music for Youth's National Festival in Birmingham.
At the event, the school orchestra led by Robbie Goodwin scooped the top prize which was originated by Music For Youth founder Larry Westland in 1971, after their performance at the Birmingham Symphony Hall, while the following evening the school's Clarinet Quintet, consisting of Sam Turton, Lily Whitehurst, Rebecca Hobbs, Chelsea Harries and Hannah Gray, coached by Rebecca Whitehurst, performed at the Birmingham Town Hall and took home the Classic FM Award for Senior Chamber Music.
