A FORMER Tenby chef who learnt his culinary skills in the town at a young age, before moving away to Switzerland, has landed himself a prestigious role in one of Europe's top restaurants. Billy Jones, son of the late Ken and Margaret Jones, who resided at 66 The Glebe, moved to Switzerland 30 years ago, after he served his apprenticeship at Tenby's Royal Gatehouse Hotel, before going on to work in Portsmouth and London. A former pupil of Greenhill School, Billy started working at the renowned Crown Hall restaurant in Zurich 18 months ago, and is now the executive chef there. "It's quite an amazing place to work and I'm very proud of the role I have. Believe it or not, I was told when I left school by one of my teachers 'nothing good will ever come you', so I'm quite glad that I've come so far in my chosen profession, and really would like to thank my parents for giving me the encouragement at a young age," explained Billy. The restaurant, owned by Gustav Zumsteg, is decorated with one of the largest private collections of original paintings in Europe, with pieces by Monet, Bonnard and Picasso - with an original self- portrait of the famous painter also on display. "The restaurant is respected throughout the world, even by journalists, who let its famous guests dine in peace. It's almost an exclusive haven of peace for the well-known faces that come here," revealed Billy, who has seen the likes of Pavarotti, Pele, Yoko Ono, Boris Becker and Franz Beckenbauer eating at the Crown Hall during his time there.
