A LOCAL chef has become the face of a campaign to promote food-related careers in Wales. As part of Welsh Food Fortnight, which kicked-off this week (September 22), Careers Wales is encouraging people across Wales to consider a future working in the food industry, and using local chef Jamie Bessant (pictured) from Kilgetty to front the campaign. Welsh Food Fortnight was set up to encourage manufacturers, suppliers, farmers and food retailers to engage with local schools, raising awareness of how food is sourced and produced, as well as increasing the profile of local manufacturers and suppliers. Jamie, 25, is testament to the rewards offered by a career in the food and drink industry. He began his career washing up in the kitchens of a local restaurant while studying for his GCSEs, but was soon given the job of commi chef through learning 'on the job'. After completing his GCSEs, he was offered the chance of studying for a one year food preparation apprenticeship, where he discovered a talent for confectionary and pastry making, and went on to study for an NVQ in the subject at Neath Port Talbot College. While still training, Jamie managed to pick up a host of awards, including Welsh Junior Baker of the Year, as well as competing in the culinary world cup in Chicago and Welsh Masterchef. He is now head chef at the Tudor Restaurant and Lodge, Jameston, and also runs a training academy for aspiring young chefs. Isobel Brown, from Careers Wales, said: "Welsh Food Fortnight is an opportunity for schools to promote the food industry as a viable and exciting career choice for young people. If students are given the chance to learn about the diverse range of food and drink that we produce here in Wales, and how that process happens, a whole range of career options, that they may never have considered could be opened to them." Jamie said: "It's really rewarding seeing the students' skills develop in the kitchen, and noting how committed they are to the work. "Every day working as a chef is different, and every day is a learning day, whatever position you're in. It's a great career choice for young people."
