The Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire Peloton Cycle Group was formed in May 2004. It is made up of police officers, police staff and business people from around the counties whose sole aim is to raise money for local charities which provide care and assistance to local people. The group's first event was held in October 2004, when a team of 18 cyclists visited the main police stations of Dyfed and Powys. With an average age of 40-plus years, the group covered just over 350 miles in four days and raised £30,000 for their nominated charities. Accumulatively, the 18-strong team cycled over 3,000 miles. The Peloton has become a registered charity and they are back for a second event which has been described by some as an adventure and by others as a mid-life crisis. Thirty members made up of 22 cyclists and eight support team are due to leave Saundersfoot on May 19, and travel to Rosscoff, France, where their cycling journey begins. It is proposed to cycle 120 miles a day for five days from Rosscoff in the north to the Spanish border in the south, a distance of 600 miles. Event organiser, Anthony Mattick, said: "The trip has been in the planning for several months and is costing the members personally over £16,000. We've been training hard and there are several members even contemplating giving up alcohol and take-away food for the next few weeks." Donations are already being received from a number of organisations and businesses and it is estimated that to date over £10,000 has been raised. The nominated charities for the Peloton 2 French Challenge 2006 are: the Cancer Ward at Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest; the Cancer Ward at Prince Phillip Hospital, Llanelli; the Paul Sartori Foundation; the Pembrokeshire Sibling Group, which provides activities, outings and support for the siblings of sick children; ASBAH - Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, Wales; the Special Care Baby Unit Pembrokeshire/ Carmarthenshire; the Pembrokeshire Cancer Support Charity; AVMA - Action for Victims of Medical Accident; the Travel Fund for Sick Children - providing financial assistance to the families of terminally ill children.
