A pioneering oral history project for a very special south Pembrokeshire community has won the backing of the Heritage Lottery Fund. The project will focus on the Carew area where the Carew Community Association has been awarded the HLF grant. The project - entitled 'Changing Times in Carew' - aims to capture the memories, and associated dialect and traditions, of the community and to ensure that these are available for future generations. All the community will be engaged and it is hoped the project will bring people together - young and old, natives and newcomers. A wide range of community groups will be involved, including the junior school, youth club, sports club, churches and chapels, Royal British Legion branch, Historical Society and WI. Through the project, it is hoped to uncover the hidden history of ordinary people, to complement the already well-documented story of the castle and its noble families. The end product will be a set of CDs that will be widely available locally, as well as exhibitions which will include the photographs and artefacts that may be discovered. The project is supported by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority - which leases the castle and mill at Carew - and PLANED's 'Sense of Place' initiative, as well as Pembrokeshire County Council's Information and Cultural Services section which will ensure that all the material produced will be properly archived. Funding will allow a part-time project officer to be appointed who will co-ordinate the project. Anyone interested in this position should contact the secretary of the Carew Community Association on 01646 651621.
