PEMBROKESHIRE College is holding four taiko-drumming workshops on Friday and Saturday, May 9 and 10, followed by a live performance in the Merlin Theatre in the evening co-starring James Barrow, of Taiko Wales, and Shingo Karube, co-leader of Akatsuki Daiko.
The taiko-drumming workshops and performances are being held as part of Adult Learning Week and are sponsored by Niace whose theme for 2003 is beating the drum.
"This is an ideal opportunity for anyone who was impressed by taiko-drummers Mugenkyo at recent performances in Tenby and Cardigan or is interested in Japanese culture or taiko-drumming in particular," said marketing services manager, Lawrence Rook.
"There's a chance to either learn taiko-drumming from Taiko Wales expert, James Barrow, during one of the workshops or just enjoy the evening performance."
The four workshops last for two-and-a-half hours starting at either 9.30 am or 1 pm on Friday or Saturday. Participants will be made up of either individuals or groups of friends, associates or colleagues.
"You don't need to have had any experience of drumming - everything will be taught from the beginning in easy steps. There's a lot of teamwork and fun too," said James Barrow, of Taiko Wales.
The planned schedule for the evening includes taiko performances from James Barrow and Shingo Karube - lead drummer of Akatsuki Daiko - and the groups of people who participated in the workshops.
Anyone wishing to take part in the taiko workshop or attending the Japanese evening performance should pre-book their tickets (workshop is free, Japanese evening £2.50) by contacting Pembrokeshire College reception on 01437 765 247.
