Narberth lifted themselves up on Saturday to produce some champagne rugby and looked nothing like the rather drab outfit on display at Carmarthen Park earlier in the week.
With the Otters' pack in control throughout the match, the students conceded seven tries in an exciting open game, although in a spirited performance the students replied with three tries of their own.
Winger Daniel Gravell opened the scoring for the Otters. The burly player caught an attempted clearance kick just outside the UWIC 22. He seized his opportunity quickly and cut across from the touchline towards the posts, leaving a trail of floundering defenders in his wake. He touched down for a try converted by outside-half Gareth James.
UWIC centre Gareth Morgan had a chance to claw back three points from a penalty, but was off target.
Narberth fly-half Gareth Janmes was in action again with a well-struck penalty to increase the lead for the Otters.
The penalty was followed by two tries in quick succession. Centre Elgan Vittle was fed by Katilimoni Tuipulotu to score a try under the posts converted by Gareth James.
Then the Otters moved the ball quickly along the line from a scrum. Nick Jones tore the defence to shreds when he burst into the line and after splitting the defence wide open he put Daniel Gravell away for a try again converted by Gareth James.
Dangerous on the counter-attack with their pace, the students bounced back with a try from winger Barry Hilliard after a series of attacks, converted by Gareth Morgan.
Unfortunately for the visitors, Morgan failed to convert another penalty opportunity. When play moved to the other end of the field, Narberth winger Andrew Jones crossed for a try in the left corner from second phase possession following another probing run by fullback Nick Jones.
Eventually the persistence of the students was rewarded when number eight Craig Morgan crossed for an unconverted try on the stroke of half-time.
Although at a weight disadvantage, the students' forwards had used the rolling maul to good effect during the first half to move the ball up field. At the start of the second half this ploy gave them a try from a lineout by flanker Ryan Harries, which was converted by Gareth Morgan.
Having been 24 points adrift, the students had closed the gap to just 10 points. However, the Otters stepped on the gas again. A Gareth James penalty was followed within minutes by an unconverted try from broken play which James also scored.
Scrum-half Adrian Killa then touched down for a try converted by Gareth James after a superb run Katilimoni Tuipulotu.
The try scoring was completed by winger Andrew Jones who moved from the left flank to the right to support a run by Daniel Gravell up the touchline. When Gravell found his path to the line blocked, he slipped a pass inside to Jones who veered left to score near the posts. The reliable boot of Gareth James gave the Otters another two points for the conversion.
Speaking after the match, team manager Robert Lewis said: "We have got to be pleased with the result and to score seven tries. As usual against the students it was a fast and open game which entertained the crowd and the sponsors.
"However, we could have scored more tries as we created a lot more scoring opportunities. It was disappointing not to finish off moves when gaps were made in the opposition defence.
"The return of Fijian international Emori Katalau from the Rugby World Cup made a big difference to our possession from lineouts and the backs thrived on having the ball quickly and cleanly.
"It was a good performance generally, although there are still areas to work on, including improving our finishing."
The Otters dominated the set-pieces with a bigger and stronger pack. Hooker Kevin Allen built up a good understanding with the lineout jumpers, while the back row of Katilimoni Tuipulotu, Gareth Bennett and Matthew Evans were inspired.
Behind the pack, scrum-half Adrian Killa provided excellent service and Gareth James had a good all round game at outside-half. Wingers Andrew Jones and Daniel Gravell took their tries well, helped each other out and combined in attack with fullback Nick Jones, although there is room for further improvement.
Katilimoni Tuipulotu was nominated as man-of-the-match by the sponsors, The Cresselly Arms, of Cresswell Quay. The match ball sponsors were the Landshipping Boys, M. J. Kennard & Son, of Crundale, Old Gowers, of London, and the RAOB Social Club, of Narberth.
Tomorrow (Saturday), Narberth are away to Trecorchy. The supporters' bus will leave the clubhouse at 12 noon.
Narberth fielded: Nick Jones (Wayne Jones), Daniel Gravell, Deiniol Evans, Elgan Vittle, Andrew Jones, Gareth James, Adrian Killa, Barry Davies, Kevin Allen (Simon Delaney), Alan Phillips (Fifitapuku Faletau), Emori Katalau, David Ebsworth (Jason Jennings), Katilimoni Tuipulotu, Gareth Bennett and Matthew Evans (Gary Denver).
