RYLA is the Rotary Youth Leadership Award which is a scheme run by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, whereby clubs select suitable candidates from local schools and organisations to be sent on a week's training, funded by the club, in order to enhance their leadership skills. It is a prestigious award and highly regarded by universities and employers when included in pupils CVs and personal statements.
In Rotary District 1150 (South Wales) all successful candidates attend a week's course at the Dol-y-Gaer training centre in the Brecon Beacons during their summer holiday. This year's successful candidates from the Narberth and Whitland club were Sioned Llewelyn from Ysgol Preseli, Crymych, and Cei Edwards from Ysgol Dyffryn Taf, Whitland. They had been selected after a highly competitive interview process.
They were welcomed to the club meeting by president John Sleigh, who invited them to report back on their experiences at Dol-y-Gaer. They both gave excellent presentations, suitably illustrated, of their week's training course.
The presentations kept the audience of Rotarians and guests enthralled and entertained, which was evidenced by the many questions which followed.
