Although perhaps not one the best ever seasons for Tenby United, there were still plenty of things to celebrate when the Seasiders held their centenary dinner at Tenby's De Valence Pavilion on Friday night.

While the United had been relegated from division two of the National League, it was, said guest speaker Mr. Bill Carne, just a hiccup, and he was confident that Tenby would bounce back next season.

Local sports pundit Mr. Carne, guest speaker at a Tenby United dinner for the fourth time, said that he was delighted to see so many members of Tenby United Youth present at the dinner and congratulated them on their success in lifting the Griffiths Cup.

"These players are the future of the club," he said. "I am hearing some very good things about them."

"It has been a disappointing season, but there is always next year," he continued. "If you stick together you will do well."

Mr. Carne praised club captain Neil Truman.

"I know he was disappointed by the outcome of the season, but I also know that he was proud to be captain in centenary year and to maintain a family tradition, with his father and grandfather also skippering Tenby," said Mr. Carne.

He also praised the club's coaching staff and players, and hoped that the club committee would "stick with them" next season.

"Okay, so you had a hiccup this season, but just stick together and see what you do next year."

Club chairman Des Brace also called on the club to put this season behind them and look with confidence to next year.

"Let's go forward and straight back up to division two," he said.

He said that things had certainly not been all 'doom and gloom', with two players, Sean James, of the 1st XV, and Becky Stroud, of Tenby United Ladies RFC, gaining international honours.

The club was also very proud of the Youth team who had won the Griffiths Under 18 cup, in a hard fought final against Haverfordwest at Neyland.

The club's mini section had also done very well this season, with the Under 11 team reaching the final of their respective cup competition.

"I think we can look forward to the future with very bright prospects," he said.

Mr. Brace also thanked the club's sponsors for the season, particularly main sponsors Texaco, and he was delighted to announce that Texaco would be remaining on board as main sponsors next season.

He also thanked the club's coaches, at all levels, for all their hard work over the season.

There was also good news off the field, said Mr. Brace, pointing out that Rugby Club teams had won the Tenby and District Pool League and had come runners-up in Darts League - also lifting the 1001 title.

Club captain Neil Truman thanked the players for sticking with him and coaches Gary Price, Gethin Evans and Max Howells, throughout the season.

"It was very hard, and some players who signed may not have had their fair share of games, but they still stuck with us," he said.

Mr. Truman felt that the club's problems last season were due to the fact that player recruitment had not started earlier enough in the off-season and he hoped that the club committee would rectify that for the forthcoming campaign.

"If we want to go back up to division two, recruitment needs to start now," he said.

"I also congratulate the Youth team, they brought some silverware to the club and we need to look after these boys," Mr. Truman continued. "These players are the future of the club."

Thanks were also expressed by the captain to Texaco and to Peter Lemon, Myrddin Dennis and Cath Brace.

In conclusion, Mr. Truman presented Mr. Carne with a Tenby United centenary tie.

Mr. Phil Thompson, of Texaco, confirmed that the company would be sponsoring the United again next season.

"When we first came on board as sponsors, it was because the United was a local club, in Tenby in Pembrokeshire," he said. "You are still a local club in Tenby, in Pembrokeshire, and whatever division you are in, we will continue to support you because you are part of the community.

"Tenby United will always be Tenby United and we are pleased and proud to be associated with you."
