No matter what the weather during Jubilee Week in Saundersfoot, the happy smiling faces of the children and young people brightened every day. Whether living locally, day trippers or holidaymakers, the young people had a full programme of 14 events from Sunday, June 2, through to Saturday, June 8.

The Crusader beach Club got off to a great start in the warm sunshine on Sunday afternoon. The programme and activities catered for a wide age range, from two to 13 years. Every afternoon the programme began with the Crusader Beach Club song 'Hey there everybody where do you want to be, at the CBC'. It was quickly learnt by the children and singing, shouts and clapping got everyone ready to have a great time.

To avoid having to abandon any event, the decision was made half-an-hour before the start of each activity whether it would be indoors at Hebron Baptist Church or on the beach. The afternoon programmes went ahead as planned at either venue with songs, story painting, quizzes and magic tricks, but several mornings the alternative wet weather activities were required. Indoors team games, volley balloon, skittles, hoopla, table football, target mat and velcro darts were greatly enjoyed, along with making various craft items, mobiles, collages and masks. There was something for everyone at the CBC.

As well as rounders and croquet (a special Crusader game), team games were always popular with much fun and laughter during the weaver, hoppa hoops, the chain gang, relays and the sand castle line. The parachute put in an appearance several times during the week and the brightly coloured dome attracted much interest. The children and the CBC team used the added fun of the parachute for cat and mouse, ball games and identification games.

Mums and dads, aunts, uncles and grandparents were seen to join the activities too, but they all came out in force to enjoy the teddy bears picnic in glorious sunshine on Tuesday, the second day of the bank holiday. Mums, dads and grans brought their teddies too. Some were old and battered and obviously very much loved, while others were bought specially for the event by keen participants visiting the beach.

There were grand picnics with a Jubilee theme, small teds with dainty picnics and some very original ideas from folk who had come unprepared and found stones for plates and sweets for the bears' picnics. Buckets were used for seats and spades for table legs. Everyone was different and all deserved to win.

First prize, a large teddy bear donated by Ocean Hair, was awarded to two-year-old Andrew, and his Bear in Big Blue House and the chocolate box second prize was awarded to the Scar Gang, Elliott and Georgina Freeman and visitors, with their animal zoo collection. Two-year-old Oliver's black bear from the USA was also much admired. Free photographs of each entry are available by calling the number below.

Whole families turned out for the prize-giving programme on Friday night at Hebron. At Crusaders, points mean prizes and everyone received their prizes at the end of the evening.

The week long programme was organised by Saundersfoot Crusader leaders Anthony, Janet and Helen Standing, who invited Geoff Beckingham from Open Air Campaign Ministries in Manchester to help run the event and add his story painting and magic skills to the programme. Some of the local children remembered Geoff who also assisted at the May Holiday Club at Hebron four years ago to launch Saundersfoot Crusaders. Other members of the CBC team were Doreen Beckingham, Richard Standing and Jill Chatwin.

As well as running the Saundersfoot Crusader group, the Standings also organise events, fun days and competitions for all the Crusader groups in the county, involving over 120 young people. Special events are being planned in the autumn for lower senior school Crusaders.

Saundersfoot divided into two groups after Easter to accommodate more young people and new members are joining nearly every week. Both groups meet at Hebron Baptist Church Hall. Junior Crusaders, years two to four, meet 6-7 pm, followed by Crusaders years five to seven at 7.15-8.30 pm. The groups meet every week in term time. For more information call 811697.
