A visit to South Wales’ biggest antiques event is the perfect way to celebrate Father’s Day on Sunday, June 18! The Carmarthen Antiques and Flea Market, which is held on the town’s showground, regularly attracts visitors from as far away as Bath and Bristol.

With hundreds of stands inside and out, serious antique enthusiasts never fail to be impressed with the range of quality exhibitors at the event, while others love the large number of stands selling rare and unusual vintage and retro pieces.

You’ll find a fantastic range of ceramics too, particularly items of Welsh interest. Amongst those to be sold at the next event is an elusive Ewenny Pottery Cat. Ewenny Pottery was made in the village of the same name near Bridgend in the 19th and early 20th century. Collectors delight in the rich colours of the glazes and the craftsmanship shown in pieces from candlesticks, jugs, vases and tankards to pigs, dogs and tygs (multi-handled cups.) However it is Ewenny cats, made to life size proportions, that are most sought after. The striking green coloured cat to be sold at The Carmarthen Antiques and Flea Market is dated 1909 and is expected to attract quite some interest.

An original Gren cartoon (pictured) is another of the star items to be sold. Grenfell ‘Gren’ Jones was one of Wales’ best-known and longest-serving newspaper cartoonists. He worked as a freelance cartoonist before in 1968 getting a staff job on the Western Mail. Gren produced a daily topical cartoon, but is best known for creating the weekly strip ‘Ponty and Pop’ in the Saturday sports edition of the Western Mail’s sister paper the South Wales Echo. Owning an ‘original Gren’ is considered an honour, only surpassed by appearing in one, which his friends Max Boyce, Harry Secombe and Wyn Calvin all did. There must be lots of Dads who would be thrilled to be given this one as a Father’s Day present!

The Carmarthen Antiques and Flea Market runs between 10 am and 4 pm. You’ll find hundreds of stands indoors and out. Admission is £4 for adults with accompanied children admitted free of charge. Well behaved dogs on a lead are welcome.
