CCTV is proving a useful crime fighting tool in Tenby. The eight cameras throughout the town have helped catch drug dealers, vandals and thieves. The system is funded by the Welsh Assembly, Pembrokeshire County Council and £2,255 from Tenby Town Council. Tenby Inspector Les Clark said: "The CCTV system continues to be a useful tool used by officers on a daily basis to prevent and detect crime and to deter anti-social behaviour. "As well as using recorded images, the system is used proactively to identify troublemakers and threatening situations - patrolling officers are then tasked to intercept individuals before problems arise. "Every police officer at Tenby can give instances of how they have used the system to benefit the public. "The system is also used during the summer to help manage the pedestrianisation and to prevent injury to visitors by offending vehicles." Incidents with which the CCTV has helped include: • Capturing youths who stole a rowing boat at the harbour. • Criminal damage of vehicles witnessed by an officer who was monitoring CCTV - a foot chase then ensued and the offender was arrested • A thief who had been targeting phone boxes across the South Wales area was arrested after his vehicle was seen on the CCTV. • A thief was caught with a stolen wallet before the victim knew he had lost it when he was spotted on CCTV acting suspiciously. • An eight-year-old missing girl was recovered after being tracked on CCTV. • A man who abandoned a child in the town was also identified and arrested using the system. • During the summer the CCTV was also used to establish the locations of individuals following a serious offence which resulted in saving many hours of police time.

Police Inspector Les Clark, who believes Tenby’s CCTV system is proving a useful tool in the fight againt crime.
