At Carew Youth Club, we are always looking for ways to raise funds for the club (writes Jo Hicks). This year we decided that, given the stresses of last year's sausage and mash night, it may be easier to tackle a cawl evening instead. Cawl doesn't roll off the plate like sausages do and all comes out of one saucepan! Well, it was definitely the right decision! It was a very well supported evening, with over 100 people coming along, and definitely an easier operation to manage in the kitchen! First of all, I must say a huge thank you to all those who helped to make the evening a success; an army of leaders gave up their time to do various jobs. A big thank you to all, but especially to some people who spent a lot of time in their kitchens! Sue and Dawn made the cawl (four huge pans), which was delicious, Janet made fruit cakes and June made a mountain of Welsh cakes! Val Evans very kindly opened the evening. Very traditionally, it was bi-lingual and she also sang in Welsh; the children also said the Lord's Prayer in Welsh. Helen did a table quiz for everyone and Deric finished the evening with a slide show. For those of you who are going mad still trying to find the word 'quiz' in the wordsearch, it was a deliberate ploy not to put it in just to test you all! (yes OK, I messed it up - sorry!). Anyway, the club raised in the region of £400 and the fantastic news is that Barclays Bank have supported this evening and will match our fund- raising efforts. For a small club which relies on fund-raising to survive, this is a massive help - so thanks to Barclays Bank and all those people who generously supported the evening. I have a feeling it may become an annual event, so I would keep your vegetable peeler handy Sue!
