Tenby’s forthcoming Mayor-making ceremony will see the town’s current ‘first citizen’ don the scarlet robes of office for a ninth time.
At Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane was the only councillor around the table to put her name forward for the hot seat, and will become Tenby’s 629th Mayor.
Clr. Mrs. Lane, who is also chairman of Tenby in Bloom, has been described as the driving force behind the resort’s floral success.
“I’m prepared to take it on again,” she told her colleagues, who had all said ‘thank you, but no thank you Mr. Mayor’ when given the chance to take on the role themselves.
“I do set high standards for myself and try to get everywhere, but there is a lot happening at the moment and I may not be available for all events.
“I look forward in the future to newer members of the town council having the confidence and experience to take the chair,” added Clr. Mrs. Lane.
Clr. Mrs. Sarah Williams called Clr. Lane a ‘great ambassador’ for the town, with Clr. Mrs. Tish Rossiter remarking that she was a ‘dedicated councillor’ who did everything from the ‘heart’.
“Clr. Mrs. Lane lives her life through the council and the town and makes an excellent Mayor,” added Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown.
The Mayor-making ceremony will take place some time in May.
The town clerk, Andrew Davies, told members that a casual vacancy for the South ward had now be declared, after Clr. Mrs. Maureen Ward’s departure from her role, explaining that by March 27, the council should be in a position to co-opt a new member unless an election has been called for.
