Carmarthenshire County Council says that its electric vehicle (EV) home gulley charging trial is a continued success across the county - offering a practical, inclusive solution for residents without off-street parking and helping pave the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Launched in September 2024 and funded by the Welsh Government’s Ultra Low Emission Vehicle Transformation Fund via Transport for Wales, the trial has already delivered tangible benefits.

Phase One saw 15 households equipped with Kerbo Charge gully systems, allowing EV cables to be safely and discreetly routed across pavements.

The Council states that the innovation eliminates trip hazards, maintains pedestrian accessibility, and enables residents to charge their vehicles using cheaper home energy tariffswithout needing a driveway.

Residents have praised the system’s simplicity, safety, and affordability, and many reported a deeper understanding of EV ownership and maintenance.

Crucially, the trial has helped overcome one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: reliable home charging for those without private parking.

With interest growing and more residents now considering the switch to electric vehicles, Phase Two is already underway. Twelve additional systems are being installed, and there is still limited availability for eligible households to join the scheme.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Waste and Infrastructure Services, Cllr Edward Thomas, said: “Supporting the transition to electric vehicles is vital for achieving our environmental goals and improving air quality across Carmarthenshire.

“This trial offers a practical and inclusive solution for residents without off-street parking, ensuring that no one is left behind in the shift to greener transport. We’re proud to be leading the way with innovative approaches like this, and I encourage eligible residents to get involved in the next phase.”
