Carew gave notice of their intention to defend the Harrison-Allen Bowl and the Division One Championship with a convincing win over Haverfordwest in the Jubilee Cup in the match played at Carew on Sunday.
The one off annual match for the Jubilee Cup is between the Harrison-Allen Bowl winners (Carew) and the runners-up in Division One (Haverfordwest) and the Harrison-Allen Bowl winners bowled out the Division One runners-up for 128 in the 43rd over.
Early order batsmen Phil Kirkby top scored for Haverfordwest with an innings of 26, which included two 6s and one 4 and all rounder Mathew Johns attempted to hold things together in his fighting knock of 20.
Wickets were evenly shared amongst the well-balanced Carew bowling attack. Spinner John Canton was the most penetrative with a spell of 3 for 27 in nine overs and there were two wickets each for skipper Darren Thomas, Steve Ive and Simon Wood.
All-rounder Robert Scourfield also bowled a tight spell and ended with a return of one for 16 from his nine overs.
The fielding of the Carew players was of the highest standard. Martin Scourfield took a brilliant running catch a point to dismiss Dai Davies off the bowling of Robert Scourfield and wicket-keeper Aled Griffiths must have juggled the ball seven times before taking the catch cleanly to dismiss Karl Rhead.
His dismissal of Stephen Phillips off the bowling of John Canton was also spectacular. Initially Griffiths dropped a sharp chance but nevertheless managed to stump Phillips in the same action.
Town opening bowlers, skipper Adrian Griffiths and the lively Simon Williams kept the runs in check at the start of the Carew innings.
Indeed there was a game on when Griffiths trapped opener Ian Sefton in front of the wicket before Sefton had got off the mark with the total on one.
However opener Nick Scourfield and his brother Robert firstly studied the ship and then took Carew to a nine wickets win in the 38th over with a partnership of 128.
The senior Scourfield reached 66 not out with two rare 6s and 10 4s and Robert revelling in the chance to move up the order reached 51 not out with seven 4s.
Adrian Griffiths and Simon Williams were the pick of the Town bowlers. Griffiths had a return of 1 for 8 in his eight overs and Williams conceded just 17 runs in his six overs.
Haverfordwest were in the Cup as runners-up as Carew won both the Bowl and the Division One Championship.
