Nine members were present at the January meeting of Carew Community Council. Among matters arising was a letter from the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority informing members that a decision on variation to conditions with regard to Carew Quarry had again been deferred. Pharmacy rota service: The Community Health Council had decided to make no change to the Pembroke pharmacy rota for the time being. Liaison Forum: A meeting of the South East Area Liaison Forum, formerly the Informal Communication Network, was to be held on Monday, February 21, at East Williamston Village Hall, at 7 pm. Carew Newton cemetery: The tree officer with the National Park Authority had been contacted for his advice and this was awaited. Chain of office: Enquiries had been made with a local jeweller and further information was awaited.

VE DAY ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

Various suggestions, including a street party, a marquee with a band at the Control Tower, and a carnival later in the summer, were considered. It was agreed to invite two representatives from local organisations to the meeting of the Historical Society on Monday, February 7, at 7 pm, when further suggestions from different bodies would be collected and a final programme of events drawn up. The dates for the main celebrations would be Saturday and Sunday, May 7 and 8.

PLANNING

The following planning applications had been approved by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority: extension to Carew Newton Farm, Carew Newton; extension to form sun lounge at Glen View, Whitehill, Cresselly. The following applications had been approved by Pembrokeshire County Council: alterations and extensions to existing pavilion at Carew Airfield Pavilion, Sageston; one house with garage, plot 25, site rear of Plough Inn, Sageston. Three further applications from the county council were considered at the meeting: Conservatory (in retrospect) - 12 Perrotts Road, Sageston (no objections). Proposed extension to form music room and bedroom - Cheriton Villa, Carew Cheriton (no objections). Permanent recycling facility - New Croft Garage, Cresselly (no objections). With regard to a certificate of lawfulness for a residential caravan at Freestone Meadow, Lawrenny Road, Cresselly, PCNPA were to defer consideration on this matter in order to obtain legal advice. Further investigations were also to be pursued at local level.

PRECEPT

Following deliberations, it was agreed that the annual precept should remain at £5,000 - the fourth year in succession that there had been no increase.

NOTIFICATION

Notification was received of the temporary closure of the footpath across Carew Mill Pond causeway (expected to last four weeks); a meeting of the South West Wales Regional Committee at Briton Ferry; and of a Cultural X-Change meeting between Pembrokeshire County Council and Carlow County Council in Ireland to create two distinct but closely linked Virtual Museums.

ANY OTHER BUSINESS

Among matters to be communicated to relevant departments and organisations were the following: Concerns about the mud on the road between the detrunked road at the junction with Birds Lane and Plough Inn, Sageston. Loose sheets of corrugated iron in Birds Lane following the recent bad weather. Police representatives to be invited to next meeting to discuss anti-social behaviour issues. Blocked drains following the recent heavy rains in various parts of the parish, including, Crickchurch, Birds Lane and Milton. Road markings at the junction of Carew Cheriton and Milton roundabout. State of the roads in West Williamston. A request to widen the road near the St, Mary's Cemetery, Carew Cheriton; also to improve the turning area in this vicinity. Chase up improvement works at Carew Bridge, as the new visitor season was about to start. Stone walls along the new bypass were falling down, in particular at Milton and Sageston. Obtain quotes and examples of framed velum or slate plaques for presentation purposes. Following the recent successful visit by Dutch airmen to the parish, it was agreed to explore the process and necessary requirements for obtaining a twin town for Carew.
