Giving children the chance to travel back 500 years in time has won staff at Carew Castle and Tidal Mill a top award for heritage education. Gareth Fitzpatrick, chief executive of the Heritage Education Trust, visited Carew Castle to hand over the Sandford Award. The prestigious award is presented to heritage sites where education services meet the exacting standards set by the Trust. Helen Davies, Carew Castle supervisor, commented: "Over 2,000 children visit the Castle and Mill every year. We're delighted that the Heritage Education Trust is so impressed with our education work. Our aim is to give children a better understanding of what life was really like in medieval times." The Castle and Tidal Mill are both managed by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority. Carew staff last won the award in 2001. Staff at another National Park site, Castell Henllys Iron Age Fort, were given the Sandford Award for their education work in 2004.
