This year's Carers Week was marked in Pembrokeshire by several events. Two Carers Days and a Carers Roadshow were held in Haverfordwest, where those who look after others had the opportunity to find out more about the support and services available to them. It is estimated that there are about 14,000 carers in Pembrokeshire, many of whom do not realise that help is at hand. One of the main aims of Carers Week is to reach out to hidden carers, who often look after spouses, parents or children with disabilities without knowing that support is available. At the Haverfordwest Carers Day, Jon Skone, Pembrokeshire County Council's director of social care and housing and Clr. Sian James, the carers champion, outlined this support, as well as talking about their own experience of caring. Several carers also gave talks. Held between June 11 and 17, Carers Week is held every year. This year's theme was 'My Life as a Carer.' If you are looking after someone with an illness or disability, you can get a free copy of the Pembrokeshire Carers Handbook or be added to the mailing list for the Carers Gazette.
