Last Saturday saw Tenby Youth, sponsored by PRL Plant Hire, make their eagerly awaited trip to Cardigan. With the young Seasiders having lost in the last minute in the home fixture, they were keen for revenge, but it was not to be their day. High-flying Cardigan kicked off playing down the slope and, with a fairly strong breeze at their backs, immediately put Tenby under pressure. From an attacking lineout, Cardigan mauled their way to within 10 metres of the Tenby line, the ball was then spun out along the threes and the defensive line was breached by the strong Cardigan inside centre. The try was converted. Once again from the restart Cardigan used the elements to their advantage and gained good field position. A penalty resulted from the lineout, which was successfuly kicked, to take the score to 10-0 with only five minutes of the game played. If things were already tough for the Seasiders, it was about to get worse when centre Ben Field- Thomas was forced to leave the field with a leg injury. This was certainly not the start Tenby were looking for, with Mathew Davies moving into the centre and Gareth Merriman coming in on the wing. Credit to the Tenby defence, their line was not beaten again. This was due to first time tackling and great commitment from the team. Tenby were now chasing the game and started fighting back at the end of the first half. Cardigan found themselves under sustained pressure for the last 10 minutes of the half and, had it not been for a series of unforced errors at crucial moments, then Tenby would have gone in at the interval within a score of the home side. At least two or three chances went begging. Cardigan, however, were successful with one more penalty before the break to close the half at 13-0. Tenby kicked off the second half knowing that they had come out in a much more attacking frame of mind. For all of Tenby's pressure, the Cardigan defence held firm throughout, until Adam Ball picked up from the back of a scrum and ran in to take the score to 13-5 with 10 minutes to play. Cardigan, however, killed the game soon after with a third successful penalty to make the score 16-5, and that finished any hopes of a comeback. It was a disappointing result, but Tenby can take many positives, knowing they competed with a highly experienced and well-organised side. The next game for the Youth is at Heywood Lane when they will be hoping to bounce back with a victory against local rivals Haverfordwest, with all support very welcome for the 2.30 kick-off Squad: Robert Clark, Nick Drewett, Marvin Thomas, Ieuan Rowell, Mike Cockburn, Alex Jenkins, Rob Tuttle, Adam Ball, Rhys Thomas, Steve Handicott, Dave Otten, BFT, Mathew Davies, Ross McKenzie, Dan Colley, Jamie Marden, Luke Dedman, Paul Woods, Nick Griffiths, Gareth Merriman.
