Calls have been made for Pembrokeshire County Council to jet-wash the stairways of Tenby multi-storey car park at least once a week from Easter to the end of September.
In a letter to Tenby Town Council at their meeting on Tuesday, Mrs. Mary Sullivan, of Cardiff, wrote that, while she and her family loved coming to Tenby, and praised its clean beaches, shops, restaurants and brightly painted properties, the multi-storey car park stairway "let the whole town down."
"The car park is used by visitors and gives the first impression," she wrote. "The stairway is filthy with layers of dirt and dust. There is a horrible brown 'something' (sic) running down the walls. It all badly needs painting, but the worst problem is the awful smell of stale urine."
She suggested the town council send someone to look at the area and implement changes to clean it up as it was letting the resort down badly.
Clr. Mrs. Maureen Ward agreed.
"The area is appalling," she said. "This letter should be forwarded to Pembrokeshire County Council for them to do something about it."
The Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown, added that the town council had complained about the multi-storey on numerous occasions and Clr. Trevor Hallett wondered what the county council's cleaning programme was.
The multi-storey needs to be looked at at least once a week during the summer and the stairways jet washed," commented Clr. Mrs. Brown.
Clr. Mrs. Maureen Ward pointed out that the county council employed three men at the car parks.
"It must make the county council a fortune," she opined. "The least they could do is clean it with a power hose every fortnight."
"The staff always seem to be there to hand out tickets when people haven't paid the parking charge," said Clr. Miss Lis James. "One day's fines alone would cover the cost of cleaning."
"Weekly cleaning is needed as a minimum from Easter to the end of September," said Clr. Mickey Folland. "Leave it any longer than that and the situation becomes intolerable."
