Sir, It was reported (Tenby Observer, November 14) that Mr. Giles Birt's recent application for renewal of permission to use the land for parking at the former Tenby Ford Garage was strongly supported by the Tenby Town Council, but had been recommended for refusal by the Pembrokeshire County Council and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. The highways development control officer (PCC) is quoted as saying 'the proposal does little to serve the town or its traffic management'. Also, the National Park panning officer is quoted as saying 'the site is within the centre of the town and the proposals seek to increase traffic flow and congestion'. Such comments are puzzling to say the least and contrast sharply with those of the members of the Tenby Town Council, as well as the applicant, who state that this car park (which provides 90 parking spaces) is undoubtedly an asset for the town and is beneficial for visitors, traders and local people. The site is, of course, actually outside the main shopping area, and as Clr. Hallett and his fellow councillors say, it takes traffic away from the town centre. Surely it is evident that accommodating 90 or so cars, thus taking them off the already crowded streets, will alleviate traffic congestion, not increase it. Compared to other car parks in and around the town, this car park is relatively easy to access, and is within short walking distance of shops, businesses, hotels and guest houses and the beaches. I, and others I have spoken to, trust that the opinion and views expressed and submitted by the Tenby Town Council (who should be in the best position to judge the merits of the case) will persuade the decision-makers accordingly.
Ian Nicholls, Saundersfoot.
